SOLD Featured below is a rare example of genuine pocket sextant or "box sextant" used by explorers for navigation. This piece was made in the mid 1800’s by the well-known scientific instrument maker Troughton & Simms from London. The sextant as several fine adjustments: arm adjusting knob, magnifying glass, two mirrors, sliding peep-hole with red filter and a silvered vernier scale with very fine markings (0-130). The sextant made of lacquered brass with nice heavy patina. The delicate engraving of the famous maker is present on the sextant face. The device is functional, the reading can be taken through the adjustable peephole and small red filter. The extra adjusting tool was lost over the ages and the magnifying glass arm has a small bend. Dimensions: 76 mm diameter and 40 mm height. Excellent relict of early navigation and surveying history.
