This is a late 19th century high altitude Balloonist or Alpinist barometer, altimeter and compass compendium made in England and sold by well known surveying instruments maker Eugene Dietzgen Co. Chicago. The barometer scale goes from 16-31 inches and the altimeter scale ranges from zero to 18,000 feet adjusted by a bezel. The wonderful and rugged compass has a nicely ornated dial and still shows the direction of magnetic North. The body of the device is made from gilded brass with minimal wear and tear. Dimensions : 50 mm diameter and 24 mm height. What makes this altimeter rare is the high altitude range of the dial which is very hard to find for such a small device. The device is still showing differences in the barometric pressure and altitude variation.
