This is an excellent example of a fruit-wood compass made in Germany in the late 1700s through mid-1800s designed for travelers and settlers and introduced in US by outfitters and early explorers. This specific item has the makers initials FN in the center of the card. Each device is unique in its own way due to the attractive printed paper dial and custom hand painted compass rose.
